Responsibilities

***New employees of Northwest Hospital Clinics are eligible to receive a $1,500-$2,000 sign-on bonus depending on experience***

 

Seeking a full-time Certified Medical Assistant looking for an opportunity to join an excellent team; supporting three providers in a growth-focused, start-up clinic which opened March 2016.  Areas of specialty are Therapeutic/Interventional Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

 

The successful candidate will perform the highest level of patient care possible, focusing on the Patients Are First principles. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to care for our patients and support our team in the following areas:

 

PATIENT CARE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare patient for examination by the provider.  Obtain vital signs, including weight, blood pressure, pulse, pulse regularity and respiratory rate. Obtain orthostatic vital signs if indicated.
  • Document patient medical history, allergies, and medications into the EMR (EPIC).
  • Utilize critical thinking in the assessment of all patients, and communicate to clinician any abnormal vital signs, changes in condition, behavioral concerns or other notable observations.
  • Provide patient education regarding clinic processes, medication management, and other aspects of care in accordance with level of education and certification.
  • Assist with coordination of care, including providing clear and detailed information regarding scheduling of appointments and ancillary tests.
  • Respond appropriately to patients in physical distress or emergency situations.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain infection control standards, including hand hygiene and appropriate use of personal protective equipment. Maintain infection control standards for exam rooms.
  • Ensure exam rooms are clean, stocked and ready for patients.
  • Maintain designated levels of supplies in specified areas and assist in the general maintenance of the patient care areas.
  • Manage the flow of patients in clinic throughout the day.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Schedule radiological testing, outpatient procedures and office visit appointments.
  • Assist with referrals to other health care providers, including physicians, and other specialty care providers.
  • Support other team members as required by clinic needs.
  • Answer telephone calls in a professional manner, direct calls appropriately, and document action in accord with clinic processes.
  • May provide assistance with clinical screening of referrals to this sub-specialty clinic including obtaining outside records.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Be flexible, organized and functional stressful situations. Be able to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Participate in staff meetings, keep informed of changes in clinic processes and make recommendations for improving clinic efficiency and delivery of patient care.
  • Promote and protect general safety for patients/families/friends and co-workers through adherence to correct procedures, timely communication of messages and test results, and appropriate consultation. 
  • Appropriately direct patients and visitors to departments across the medical center.
  • Review patient needs with providers daily, preferably at the start of each day or session. 
  • Advocate for the patient/family by locating appropriate staff to address concerns. 
  • Apply appropriate policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice in performing duties. 
  • Participate in orientation of new staff and preceptorship of MA students. 
  • Adhere to attendance standards.
  • Comply with Service Culture Guidelines.
  • Perform other patient care and administrative duties as assigned, in accord with level of education and certification, Northwest Hospital policies/procedures and clinic processes.
  • Contribute to an environment that respects the socio-economic, ethno-cultural, and lifestyle diversity of patients and staff.
  • Use Patients are First principles, pillars, and goals to coordinate and lead patient care activities.

CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SUPPORTincludes but is not limited to:

  • Acts as a back-up front office staff member as needed; answers telephone using defined etiquette standards; route calls and messages.
  • Answers questions and follows through on inquiries.
  • Assists and supports other staff members as needed.

 

Qualifications

Education Background

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Training Program.

Licensure, Registration, Certification 

  • Medical Asst – Certified.
  • CPR certification required.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a health care setting as a certified Medical Assistant preferred

Special Training/Skills

  • Basic computer skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to administer injections and perform basic lab testing, immunizations, urinary catheter insertions, EKG, allergy testing, etc.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records.
  • Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Physical Abilities 

  • Must be able to safely maneuver patients and supplies.
  • Able to sit for four hours at a time.  Able to operate a computer.
