Responsibilities

The Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor is responsible for teaching hospital staff BLS/CPR for the organization, under the overall clinical direction of the Staff Development Coordinator and American Heart Association Community Training Center (CTC). Functions as a content expert in American Heart Association Basic Life Support procedures

Qualifications

Education/Skills Requirements

  • Required Registered Nurse or Respiratory Therapist or equivalent. 
  • RN preferred
  • Requires associate or bachelors degree in nursing; or Completion of approved 2-yr training program in respiratory care.
  • Knowledge of adult learning/teaching principles, required.

Licensure, Registration, Certification 

  • RN—Requires Washington State RN license
  • RT—requires certification or registration from NBRC; requires Washington state certification.
  • American Heart Association Certification as a Basic Life Support Instructor and/or instructor/Trainer, required.

Special Training/Skills 

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult teaching and learning principles. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 
  • Able to teach in group setting and provide individual instruction appropriate for the age and capabilities of the learner.
  • Knows AHA BLS requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer systems and A/V equipment.  

Work Experience

  • At least two years experience in health care setting preferred. 
  • At least two years experience in formal and informal teaching groups preferred.  

Physical Abilities

  • Able to perform basic life support for adults, children, and infants.
  • Able to get up and down to the floor easily and repeatedly over a 3 – 6 hour period.

Physical Demand Level:  Light

In an 8-hour workday, must be able to-

 

Lift / Carry 20 pounds occasionally and 10 pounds frequently

 

As required, must be able to-

Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Kneel, Crawl, Climb and Reach above shoulders

Push and Pull

Perform fine motor functions

Must possess functional vision, hearing, and speech in order to communicate effectively with clients, client advocates, and staff.
