This is a Temporary Position


Abstraction of physician practice / clinical records and inputting facility specified key clinical key data elements from the patient’s medical record into the Electronic Health Record for the purpose of providing caregivers with a snapshot summary of the patient in the EHR. 


Identifies key data elements in the medical record, accurately interprets and analyzes the medical record documentation, and extrapolates pertinent health information into the electronic record.  Shows a proficiency in the use of the tools required for data abstraction.  Demonstrates attention to detail, accuracy, efficiency and accountability when abstracting clinical information. 



Excellent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting directly with medical providers and the contacts within the provider clinics.   Inspires trust by maintaining a positive attitude and accountability when interacting directly with the medical providers regarding the medical record status.   Reports key issues to management.


Education Background 

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Relevant degree required and course work in a related healthcare field required. 
  • Current nursing license preferred (RN,LPN,CMA)

Licensure, Registration, Certification 

  • If driving is included as a function of the job, maintains a valid Washington Driver’s License and clean record.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in a medical clinic or hospital setting  
  • Experience with medical records required; abstracting experience preferred.   
  • Experience with electronic health records required; Epic specific preferred 
  • Experience with coding as outlined in ICD 9 (or 10) CM, CP 
  • Experience as a medical transcriptionist preferred 
  • Previous experience as a Register Nurse or Medical Assistant is preferred.

Special Training/Skills 

  • Strong Microsoft application skills:  Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Excellent data entry skills required.
  • Able to work independently in a time oriented environment.
  • Well versed in using Epic and transcribing physician input into electronic record. 
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Familiarity with clinical workflows.
  • Excellent organizational skills, high attention to detail and accuracy, able to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Knowledge of physician practice management systems preferred.
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt to multiple clinic environments and patient populations while maintaining a high level of professionalism. 
  • Medical terminology required (either from experience or formal classes).

Physical Abilities 

  •  Ability to sit for up to four hours at a time.  Able to operate a computer.  Able to arrange transportation to various clinics for on-site work.
