    Ensures coding compliance by applying all coding guidelines and principles as defined in the Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant, and leading authorities. Facilitates outpatient diagnosis and procedures coding. Reviews health records and identifies key clinical data elements within the record and translates this data from verbal description of disease, injuries and procedures into numerical designation applying ICD10 and CPT4 coding systems. Resolves PFS, Chargemaster accounts, and other billing issues. Trains and monitors new coding hires. Covers vacations and absences. Follows applicable coding regulations and corporate compliance standards and policies reimbursement.

    Education Background

    • At a minimum, position requires AA/AS in Medical Records plus certifications (see below for required certifications). At the discretion of HIM Management, significant and relevant work experience may be substituted for formal education.

    Licensure, Registration, Certification

    • Required: Either CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) from AHIMA – the American Health Information Management Association Or or COC (Certified Outpatient Coding) or CCC (Certified Cardiology Coding) credential from AAPC - the American Academy of Professional Coders.
    • Preferred: Either RHIA (Registered Health Information Administration) or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) from AHIMA – the American Health Information Management Association preferred.

    NOTE: Incumbents are required to maintain credentialed status through continued education credits.


    Special Training/Skills

    • Expert command of ICD10 and CPT4 coding methology.
    • Experience in Outpatient including Cardiology Coding.
    • Ability to read and understand complex surgical reports
    • Orientation to detail, demonstrated organizational skills.
    • Ability to communicate and deal effectively with public; strong communication skills.
    • Good knowledge of disease processes.
    • Knowledge of department, hospital and JCAHO guidelines. Ability to train and mentor.

    Work Experience

    • Minimum two years acute care or major outpatient setting coding experience required.
    • Minimum one year experience in Cardiology Coding required.
    • Interventional Radiology (IR) experience preferred.
    • Extensive experience with applicable software applications and abstracting systems.

    Physical Abilities

    • Incumbent may be positioned behind a desk or at a PC for periods of two hours at a time. Incumbent will be reading for approximately 80% of workday. Maintains current knowledge of and utilizes ergonomic workstation recommendations.

    Physical Demand Level: Sedentary

    In an 8-hour workday, must be able to-

    Lift / Carry 10 pounds occasionally


    As required, must be able to-

    Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Kneel, Crawl, Climb and Reach above shoulders.
    Push and Pull.
    Perform fine motor functions.
    Must possess functional vision, hearing, and speech in order to communicate effectively with clients, client advocates, and staff.
