    Responsibilities

    The goal of the Utilization Management (UM) Nurse is to ensure delivery of optimal care for the patient while promoting fiscal responsibility.

     

    The UM Nurse establishes and maintains an efficient, cost effective care management process by determining the medical necessity and financial liability for patients all hospitalized patients. The UM Nurse communicates this information with the interdisciplinary team to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, policies and procedures, and quality patient care for the duration of the hospitalization. The UM Nurse is responsible for maintaining the knowledge and skill set related to utilization review, care coordination, and performance improvement.

     

    Works in a manner which supports the mission and vision of Care Management at Northwest Hospital and Medical Center.  Ensures that daily operations, procedures and standards of care are maintained in accordance with hospital and JACHO guidelines.

    Qualifications

    Education Background

    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.  Master’s degree preferred.

    Licensure/Certification

    • Registered Nurse with current Washington State license.
    • Case Management certification preferred.

    Work Experience

    • Five years in acute care setting.  A minimum of three years previous experience in utilization management required.  Knowledge of medical screening criteria required, previous experience with InterQual and/or Milliman preferred.

    Special Training/Skills

    • Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit(s)/department.
    • Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served on the assigned unit/department.
    • Ability to flex to assist other department members as needed.
    • Psychiatric assessment skills at a level consistent with social work job assignment.
    • Ability to handle a fluctuating workload.
    • Ability to communicate clearly in English (verbal and written) with all stakeholders (staff members, clinicians, practitioners and the general public.
    • Computer skills consistent with electronic charting and referral system

    Physical demand Level: Sedentary

    In an 8-hour workday, must be able to-

    Lift / Carry 10 pounds occasionally

     

    As required, must be able to-

    Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Kneel, Crawl, Climb and Reach above shoulders

    Push and Pull

    Perform fine motor functions

    Must possess functional vision, hearing, and speech in order to communicate effectively with clients, client advocates, and staff.
