    Social workers implement the full range of social work clinical protocols for patients ranging from infancy through adulthood. Social work interventions include crisis intervention, social work assessment and discharge planning. 

    Priority patients include:

    • Patients in need of psychiatric evaluation. 
    • Minors. 
    • Families of patients who are in need of trauma/grief interventions.
    • Sexual Assault victims. 
    • Domestic, elder, and child abuse victims. 
    • Patients needing nursing home placements. 
    • Patients with chemical dependency and other psycho-social emergencies. 
    • Patients needing general resources including transportation and housing. 
    • Patients needing other services as requested by provider. 

    Top candidates will have knowledge of legal requirements for vulnerable populations, involuntary treatment for psychiatric patients and patients with chemical dependencies. To be successful in this position, the Medical Social Worker will have knowledge of community resources relevant to the target population. 


    Education Background:

    • Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a program accredited by the Council of Social Work Education required.
    • Eligible to be a practicum instructor for the University Of Washington School Of Social Work preferred. 

    Licensure, Registration, Certification

    • Registered in the State of WA as a Licensed Social Work Associate Advanced (LSWAA), Independent Clinical (LICSW) or LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor) within 90 days employment.

     Special Training/Skills

    • Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served on the assigned unit/department.
    • Ability to flex to assist other department members as needed.
    • Familiarity with community psychiatric resources. 

    Work Experience

    • One year full time professional social work experience in an Emergency Department setting preferred.
    • Six months experience in a health care delivery system required.
    • Health care experience may include a practicum placement as part of a social work training program and/or employment experience. 

     Physical Abilities

    • Able to sit for extended periods of time.  Able to operate a computer.
    • Must be able to handle a fluctuating workload
    • This job requires ability to communicate clearly in English (verbal and written) with all stakeholders (staff members, clinicians, practitioners and the general public).

    Physical Demand Level:  Sedentary

    In an 8-hour workday, must be able to-

    Lift / Carry 10 pounds occasionally


    As required, must be able to-

    Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Kneel, Crawl, Climb and Reach above shoulders

    Push and Pull

    Perform fine motor functions

    Must possess functional vision, hearing, and speech in order to communicate effectively with clients, client advocates, and staff.
