    The role of the ITA Court Evaluator is to interpret the merits of each 72 hour and revocation case in terms of RCW 71.05 and the WAC guidelines (388.865). The primary function of these evaluations is to establish whether or not two criteria are met:


    The presence of a mental disorder


    The presence of one or more of the following:

    • Danger to self
    • Danger to others
    • Grave disability (failure to adequately care for needs of health and/or safety)
    • Danger of property
    • Both criteria must be met to pursue a petition for an additional 14 days of involuntary treatment
    • Each case will be reevaluated with the prosecutor prior to testimony to establish its merits with respect to witnesses, available discharge resources, and possible change in any other aspect of the case which could influence testimony or outcome (i.e. change in patient’s mental status or available treatment alternatives).



    Education Background

    • Advanced Degree as required by specialty.

    Licensure, Registration, Certification 

    • Licensed as a psychologist, advanced registered nurse practitioner, or independent clinical social worker in the State of Washington.
    • Maintains a valid Washington Drivers License and a clean driving record.

    Work Experience

    • 10 years recent experience working with acutely ill psychiatric patient’s specifically involving evaluation of psychiatric safety, level of function, psychiatric diagnoses and medications.
    • 5 years recent experience working in a hospital setting.

    Special Training/Skills

    • Expertise with the Washington Involuntary Treatment Act (RCW 71.05)
    • Experience providing expert psychiatric, psychological or mental status testimony in civil or criminal court proceedings
    • Basic computer skills
    • Knowledge of disposition resources in King County
    • Ability to testify to physiological complications of or associated with psychiatric conditions

    Physical Abilities

    • This job requires ability to communicate clearly in English (verbal and written) with all stakeholders (physicians, caregivers, patients, family members) for the effective treatment of patients.

    In an 8-hour workday, must be able to-


    Lift / Carry

    20 to 50 pounds occasionally

    10 to 25 pounds frequently

    up to 10 pounds constantly


    As required, must be able to-

    Must possess functional vision, hearing, and speech in order to communicate effectively with clients, client advocates, and staff.
